In this video we compile excerpts of interviews that we conducted from 2018 to 2019 pertaining to the extradition case of Julian Assange and the implications it has on press freedoms and democracy. This compilation includes analyses from Abby Martin, Jill Stein, Yanis Varoufakis and Noam Chomsky. This video also includes statements from Edward Snowden, Srećko Horvat and Angela Richter that were recorded at a demonstration for Assange in Berlin on the 2nd of May, 2019. Edward Snowden’s written statement was read out by Angela Richter.

ABOUT JILL STEIN

Jill Stein was the U.S. Green Party’s presidential candidate in 2016 and 2012. She is an organizer, physician and environmental health advocate. In the 2016 election, she was the only national Presidential candidate to call for an emergency jobs program to jointly solve the climate and economic crises, and for demilitarization through a foreign policy based on international law, diplomacy and human rights. She was also the only candidate to be arrested for supporting the Dakota Sioux nation in resisting the DAPL pipeline. Following the 2016 election, she launched a recount initiative – which is ongoing – to investigate potential interference in the presidential election.


ABOUT YANIS VAROUFAKIS & DiEM25

Yanis Varoufakis & DiEM25Yanis Varoufakis is a professor of Economic Theory at the University of Athens, former finance minister of Greece and founder of the Democracy in Europe Movement 2025 (DiEM25). Varoufakis is also the author of several books on the European debt crisis, the financial imbalance in the world and game theory.

DiEM25 is a pan-European, cross-border movement of democrats that is focused on addressing the economic and social problems faced by Europe today. It provides an alternative to austerity policies that it  argues are dividing the continent and fueling the rise of “international nationalists“.


ABOUT NOAM CHOMSKY:

noam-chomsky-black-and-whiteNoam Chomsky is a world-renowned political dissident, anarchist, linguist, author and institute professor emeritus at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he’s taught for more than half a century.

Chomsky has written more than 100 books, his latest being “Because We Say So“.  Chomsky has been a highly influential academic figure throughout his career, and was cited within the Arts and Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI) more often than any other living scholar from 1980 to 1992. His work has influenced a wide range of domains, including artificial intelligence, cognitive science, computer science, logic, mathematics, music theory and analysis, psychology and immunology.

Chomsky also developed the propaganda model of media criticism with Edward S. Herman which they presented in their book “Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media“. Chomsky remains a leading critic of U.S. foreign policy, neoliberal capitalism, and mainstream news media.


ABOUT SRECKO HORVAT

Srecko Horvat

Srećko Horvat, philosopher and activist, born in Yugoslavia (1983), without permanent address. He published more than 10 books translated into more than 15 languages, most recently: “What Does Europe Want?” (together with Slavoj Žižek, Columbia University Press, 2014), “Welcome to the Desert of Post-Socialism” (Verso, 2015) and “The Radicality of Love” (Polity Press, 2015). He regularly publishes articles in the Guardian, New York Times and Al Jazeera.

He was one of the founders of the Subversive Festival and has participated in many movements, from occupations to the World Social Forum. Together with Greece’s ex-finance minister Yanis Varoufakis he founded Democracy in Europe Movement (DiEM25): www.diem25.org.


ABOUT EDWARD SNOWDEN

Edward Snowden

Edward Snowden is a former intelligence officer who served the CIA, NSA and DIA for nearly a decade as a subject matter expert on technology and cybersecurity. In 2013, he revealed that the NSA was seizing the private records of billions of individuals who had not been suspected of any wrongdoing, resulting in the most significant reforms to US surveillance policy since 1978.

He has received awards for courage, integrity, and public service, and was named the top global thinker of 2013 by Foreign Policy magazine. Today, he works on methods of enforcing human rights through the application and development of new technologies. He joined the board of Freedom of the Press Foundation in February 2014.
