On the 23rd of April 2016 a coalition of 20 activist networks organized a demonstration under the banner “Stop TTIP & CETA” in Hanover (Germany) against so called transnational free trade agreements such as TTIP (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership) and CETA (Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement) – a day before the arrival of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and US President Barack Obama, who will be opening the Hanover exhibition together with the aim of promoting these agreements.

According to the organizers of the demonstration, these so called trade and investments partnerships are unconstitutional and threaten the foundations of democracy in Germany and Europe. On the website of the organizers it states: “We require a social and ecological barriers for globalization. But TTIP and CETA are taking us in the wrong direction.”

Organizers estimate that 90,000 people took part to demonstrate against TTIP, CETA and even TISA. Other media outlets and police reports estimate circa 35,000 participants.

We interviewed a number experts and organizers with diverse expertise to find out more about the significance and meaning of these free trade agreements.
