{"id":1231,"date":"2016-03-27T22:46:16","date_gmt":"2016-03-27T20:46:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.actvism.org\/?p=1231"},"modified":"2020-11-06T17:48:59","modified_gmt":"2020-11-06T16:48:59","slug":"corporate-media-chomsky-machon-jay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.actvism.org\/en\/latest\/corporate-media-chomsky-machon-jay\/","title":{"rendered":"Navigating Corporate Media with Noam Chomsky, Annie Machon (Former MI5) and Paul Jay (Real News)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"row justify-content-md-center\">\n<div class=\"col-md-8 pb-3\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Navigating Corporate Media with Noam Chomsky, Annie Machon (Former MI5) and Paul Jay (Real News)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">acTVism Munich organized an event at the Muffatwerk in Munich, in which the significance of whistleblowers, activism and the alternative media in the 21st century were discussed with Noam Chomsky, Paul Jay, founder of the Real News Network, and Annie Machon, former MI5-Officer turned whistleblower. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>State or corporate media outlets are driven by the motive to maximize profits, or in some countries like Germany, state media forces citizens to pay a monthly fees\u00a0 that some experts and activists consider is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.handelsblatt.com\/politik\/deutschland\/gutachten-fuer-handelsverband-verfassungsrechtler-nennt-gez-gebuehr-verfassungswidrig\/7690726.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unconsitutional<\/a> on the grounds that citizens should have uninhibited and free access to a wide range of information that they consider is a prerequiste to making informed decisions towards the political process.\u00a0 State and corporate outlets also depend heavily on corporate sponsors and\/or advertisements agencies and have the inherent tendency to become highly concentrated, both in times of economic growth or contraction. He combined the ideas of Gustave Le Bon and Wilfred Trotter on crowd psychology with the psychoanalytical ideas of his uncle, Sigmund Freud. In his ground breaking book called <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edward_Bernays\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Propaganda which he published in 1928<\/a>, he writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<em>The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized.
