Lawrence Wilkerson (ret.), former Chief of Staff to U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, about U.S. aggression against Venezuela and what it reveals about the current trajectory of American power and foreign policy.

The conversation then turns to Ukraine, where a so-called “coalition of the willing” is discussing the deployment of multinational troops as security guarantees. Wilkerson assesses whether Russia would ever accept such an arrangement, how Germany and Europe are positioning themselves, and whether these initiatives are likely to move the conflict toward a settlement — or push it toward a wider confrontation.

ÜBER LAWRENCE WILKERSON

Lawrence Wilkerson ist derzeit leitender Mitarbeiter am Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft und war zuvor angesehener außerordentlicher Professor für Politik und öffentliche Verwaltung am College of Williams and Mary. Lawrence Wilkersons letzte Positionen in der Regierung waren die des Stabschefs von Außenminister Colin Powell (2002-05), des stellvertretenden Direktors des Stabs für Politikplanung des Außenministeriums unter der Leitung von Botschafter Richard N. Haass und des Mitglieds dieses Stabs, das für Ostasien und den Pazifikraum sowie für politisch-militärische und legislative Angelegenheiten zuständig war (2001-02). Vor seiner Tätigkeit im Außenministerium diente Wilkerson 31 Jahre lang in der US-Armee. Während dieser Zeit war er Mitglied der Fakultät des U.S. Naval War College (1987 bis 1989), Sonderassistent von General Powell, als dieser Vorsitzender der Joint Chiefs of Staff war (1989-93), sowie Direktor und stellvertretender Direktor des U.S. Marine Corps War College in Quantico, Virginia (1993-97). Wilkerson schied 1997 als Oberst aus dem aktiven Dienst aus und begann als Berater von General Powell zu arbeiten. Außerdem lehrte er nationale Sicherheitsfragen im Honors Program der George Washington University. Derzeit arbeitet er an einem Buch über die erste Regierung von George W. Bush.
