Civil Death: How Germany Is Shutting Down a Journalist

9. July 2026

In this video, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Chris Hedges speaks with German journalist Hüseyin Doğru about a case that reaches far beyond one individual: the EU sanctions imposed on him and his news outlet Red Media.

Doğru describes how the sanctions, imposed after his reporting on Gaza and the Palestinian movement, have changed his life — from frozen bank accounts and severe restrictions on his work to the consequences for his family. He explains his legal efforts to challenge the measures and why he sees this case as a warning sign for press freedom, independent journalism, and the rise of self-censorship in Europe.
