Within days of taking office, the second Trump administration has announced the imposition of massive tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China. Canada and Mexico have vowed retaliation with huge tariffs of their own. China, too, has vowed retaliatory tariffs and has announced its intention to file suit against the United States at the World Trade Organization. On the first episode of The Global Economy Report, Dimitri Lascaris spoke with Professor of economics Costas Lapavitsas about the new tariff war. Lascaris and Lapavitsas also discussed the emergence of a new artificial intelligence company in China, DeepSeek.

He was a member of the shadow cabinets of the Green Parties of Canada and Quebec. In 2020, he ran for the leadership of the Green Party of Canada and came in second. He is also the founder and editor of the YouTube channel Reasons 2 Resists with Dimitri Lascaris.

ABOUT COSTAS LAPAVITSAS

Costas Lapavitsas is Professor of Economics at SOAS, University of London. He researches the political economy of money and finance, the financialisation of contemporary economies, and the economics of the European Union. He has published widely and writes for the UK and the international press. His latest book is “The State of Capitalism”, Verso, 2023.
