In this analysis, Dimitri Lascaris lays bare the financial reality behind the war in Ukraine. Ukraine is effectively insolvent, yet in recent weeks the EU and Canada have pledged new loans and guarantees amounting to hundreds of billions.

These funds are presented as support, but a closer look reveals a system of debts that cannot be repaid, continuous refinancing, and political promises resting on an increasingly fragile economic foundation. Lascaris explains why this financing can only be sustained through ever-new inflows of money, what role the military-industrial complex plays, and why the official promises of repayment are economically untenable.
