In this episode of Know Your Stuff, we interview Jo-Marie Burt, Associate Professor of Political Science and Latin American Studies at George Mason University and Senior Fellow at the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA). We talk about the outcome of the second round of the presidential elections on June 6, 2021 – including the two candidates, Keiko Fujimori and Pedro Castillo. Finally, we discuss how the international community has reacted to the situation in Peru.

ABOUT JO-MARIE BURT

Jo-Marie Burt is Associate Professor of Political Science and Latin American Studies at George Mason University and Senior Fellow at the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA), a leading human rights research and advocacy organization. She is an internationally known expert on politics in Peru.

(She has been a visiting professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, a member of the research team of the Peruvian Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and an international observer to the human rights trial of former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori. She is the author of numerous books and articles about Peru, including a definitive study of the Fujimori regime, entitled Political Violence and the Authoritarian State in Peru: Silencing Civil Society (Palgrave 2007) and Transitional Justice in the Aftermath of Civil Conflict: Lessons from Peru, Guatemala and El Salvador (2018).)
